چکیده

The expanding application of computing systems and the continuing advances in semiconductor technology are forcing the on-chip inclusion of design for dependability features (concurrent fault tolerance). These features detect, log and provide recovery from errors induced by faults concurrently with the operation of the system. A very difficult task is the hardware validation of concurrent fault tolerant design features in a nondestructive, unobtrusive manner. A semi-automated facility has been developed at the University of South Florida for this purpose using Laser Fault Injection (LFI) to simulate soft errors during system operation. The facility provides means to extract target coordinates from the CAD database, synchronize the laser pulse with the operation of and capture health warnings issued by the system under test. The key fault tolerant features (automatic instruction retry on single soft errors) of a state of the art fault tolerant computer for space applications were validated at this facility.

Dependability assessment of by-wire control systems using fault injection

This paper is focused on the validation by means of physical fault injection at pin level of a time-triggered communication controller: the TTP/C versions C1 and C2. The controller is a commercial off-the-shelf product used in the design of by-wire systems. Drive-by-wire and flyby-wire active safety controls aim to prevent accidents. They are considered to be of critical importance because a se...

On the Extension of Xception to Support Software Fault Models

Software faults are recognized as the major cause of system outages. The two possible approaches to overcome this problem are fault avoidance and fault tolerance. Quality assurance techniques fail to attain the zero defects mark, making fault tolerance vital to assure mission and business critical systems dependability. One major issue is the difficulty in the verification and validation of sof...

Facilitating the Design of Fault Tolerance in Transaction Level SystemC Programs

Due to their increasing complexity, today’s SoC (System on Chip) systems are subject to a variety of faults (e.g., soft errors, component crash, etc.), thereby making fault tolerance a highly important property of such systems. However, designing fault tolerance is a complex task in part due to the large scale of integration of SoC systems and different levels of abstraction provided by modern ...

Challenges and Opportunities with Fault Injection in Virtualized Systems

We analyze: (i) use of virtualization to facilitate fault injection into non-virtualized systems, and (ii) use of fault injection to evaluate the dependability of virtualized systems. With the Xen Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) as a test case, for (i), we injected thousands of faults into the code, memory, and registers of paravirtualized and fullyvirtualized Virtual Machines (VMs) from within t...

Research on the Simulation-based Fault Injection Design with Consideration of Board-level Built-In Test

As embedded system is widely used in setting up avionic devices, it’s important to verify and validate the system’s reliability. With the help of Built-In Test (BIT) technology, faults can be reported and isolated. Especially the software BIT, which is a popular solution to test the dependability of embedded boards and the entire system. Furthermore, the demand for dependable BIT software becom...
